Camden Market is street food heaven. Despite the tourist infestation, even the most hard boiled Londoners have to admit it has some of the city's best eats.
In Stable Street lies Funky Chips, a humble shack specialising in loaded chips and good vibes. The queue extended farther than either of its neighbours', which I took as an excellent sign.
Funky Chips does have a menu, but customisation is more than encouraged. Every visitor to the stall gets a single chip on a fork to try out all the sauces, and all the toppings are clearly visible.
Funky Chips' chef and sole staff member made sure to treat every potential customer like a royal. He used his impressive language skills to his advantage and even the sceptical Slovakians in front of me were mollified by his attempts.
When it was my turn, the lad serving somehow got me to divulge my life story to him as he showed me his "real potatoes...none of that fake stuff from next door", as he put it. Perhaps it was the thick nacho cheese hypnotising me with its ooze, but I felt like the most important person in the world when my extra cheese was sprinkled on.

Chips with grated cheese, halloumi, nacho cheese, fried onions and secret sauces sounded like a combination made in heaven. The fact that my food was piled so high the takeaway box wouldn't close also didn't hurt.
I made the short trek off to Hawley Wharf to grab a seat - pro tip, there are chairs and tables up there that no one who goes to the main market knows about. Once there, I prepared to indulge in my feast as onlookers whispered 'I wonder where she got that'.
It was heaven. The chips were beautifully crunchy to the point I still don't regret the burn I sustained on my tongue that's tingling as I type. The Escobar and Nice Thing sauces added velvety dimensions I didn't know existed.

The nacho cheese, rather than being claggy and sickly, was smooth and flavourful, tasting like real cheese instead of over-processed yellow goo. The grated cheeses did indeed melt and the ribbons of lactose barely had time to cling on to the chips before entering my gob.
I got halfway through my meal before I started to feel uncomfortably full, yet I persevered until I'd eaten three quarters of it. For just £9.60, I'd plowed my way through a veritable mountain of chips (a 'small' size, I dread to think what a large is) so good I didn't want to stop.
Funky Chips excel at their craft, not only for the incredible food but also for their ability to make anyone feel like they deserve the potatoey goodness. I'll be back for both the cheese and the banter.
